History:
The FM Towns was a Japanese proprietary PC from Fujitsu that debuted in 1989 with a standard CD-ROM drive that was far ahead of its time by allowing games and a graphical windowed OS to boot from CD. That was a full 7 years before Windows 95b allowed booting from CD, and that was for installation purposes only.
Many FM Towns game developers took advantage of this and used CD Audio tracks to enhance the play experience of games with music, sound effects and voices.
Some of these games were originally released on the IBM PC + clones or the NEC PC-9801 on only a single or handful of floppies with poor synthesized sound, but really came to shine when ported over and spruced up with multimedia effects on the "Towns". A good example of this was the Ultima series by Origin. While Ultima 6 on the FM-Towns had full speech (in Japanese and English!) for all characters in-game, Ultimas 7 and 8 were released later for the PC with "speech packs" for only a few characters. The technological advantage was clear, but the FM Towns computer and the games for it were expensive, relegating it to niche status, and it never was offered outside of the Japanese market. By the mid 1990's with the Windows 95 invasion, as IBM PC clones were offered by multiple Japanese companies like Panasonic or Hitachi with CD-ROM drives becoming more commonplace and the FM Towns itself offering Windows 95 as an OS option, its strength and uniqueness in the market began to wane.
Today however, retro gamers might find the Towns to offer some of the best versions of games of the early 1990's, often with English support (see "JP" or "EN" in torrents).
